This orbit is characterized by the fact that the object put on it is moving simultaneously to the turnover of the globe independently of its mass (the currency of the Earth is for such a satellite is exactly equal of astronomical twenty-four hours). Orbita geostacjonarna jest orbitą kołową i przebiega na wysokości 35 786 km (42 160 km od środka Ziemi), czyli w miejscu gdzie siła przyciągania ziemskiego jest równoważona przez siłę odśrodkową w układzie związanym z obracającą się Ziemią. Wykorzystywana jest głównie przez satelity geostacjonarne, zwłaszcza telekomunikacyjne i meteorologiczne. Umieszczenie satelitów telekomunikacyjnych na orbicie geostacjonarnej pozwala na utrzymanie stałej łączności z nimi przy użyciu anten kierunkowych bez konieczności nieustannego zmieniania kierunku ustawienia anteny.
